When people in movies speak, there is a unique tension not unlike in real life. Pain-laden monologues, manufactured professions of love, the singular moment of I Will Chase My Dream In The Big City — we mine them endlessly so we can make sense of our own pain, love, and dreams. Rarely do we notice the spaces, pauses, and details that augment them: the tilt of the head, a breathless simper, a strain on an eyebrow, a sudden downpour, a steady stream of water in the background, or a bird cawing in the sky. Buwan Buwan’s thisbeing_ sharpens these cinematic dimensions with soft hands. It ferrets out the unnoticed, the underappreciated; personifies the spheres of nature at work. It is the gentle force that lets us savor an experience and eases the transition to the next moment, the next day. It is why we finish the song that plays as the end credits roll. It is the last moment of isolation we have before the world crowds itself once more.

Buwan-Buwan is a traditional Filipino game that enacts the lunar eclipse. Players draw a circle on the ground representing the moon, and must stay inside this circle. Meanwhile, one player acts as the Bakunawa, the mythical giant sea serpent who would eat the moon: he may not enter the circle, but must touch another player who is inside it in order to switch places.
